So, something is wrong with my hair… At first I
blamed Bebito but then the wise of my meditation group told me that pregnancy
is supposed to give you fabulous hair!
What a mess… since I’m in New Zealand there are
changes that I don’t know whom to blame for. The hair thing is Bebito’s or this
devil’s country’s fault? This time it’s not going to be Bebito’s fault, because
it’s apparently that New Zealand’s water is so pure and natural that it has
made a revolution in my whole hair… My hairs are used to something else, to
chemical products and non-neutral PH. It’s modernity’s hair and Maori water is
making it wild.
Let’s see if the magic powers of pregnancy overcome
the organic powers of New Zealand’s water and I’ll finally be able to show off
fabulous hair!
About 10 days after I bought my pregnancy test, I went back to the drugstore. It hadn't occurred to me that the pharmacist might remember me until I was in front of her. I asked for folic acid and paracetamol (for those unaware of the subject, it's like the pregnancy combo). That's when I realized that she might be tying up loose ends in her pharmaceutical head that knows it all. She confirmed my suspicions when she asked with an excessively suggestive face "How's summer...?". I answered "Very good" and I avoiding touching my belly but I smiled a first-time mom buddy smile (it's being developed, so it might change). I think we understood each other. I would like to know what faces she puts on if next week I come back and buy condoms.
Sometimes I forget I'm pregnant... and then something reminds me of it. At first it was an unusual tiredness when trying to do normal stuff, like climbing a steep street or carrying the groceries from the supermarket. I debate myself between acting as if nothing and trying to live normally ("you are not sick, you are pregnant" my Mom repeated in my brain), or exploiting my unusual condition to my benefit and Bebito's, of course. Then started certain physical changes... It all began a day when my husband approach me with less than holly intentions and, with the precision that characterizes him, he pinched my nipple. Ouch! And not an ouch! 50 shades of Grey-style. A real ouch!, like it hurt. Either my breasts had acquired super-sensation (now yes, Caballo de Fuego-style, a bit less sexy) or something was going on... Then a certain expansion began. Nor muffin top, neither fatness, simply an expansion of my middle section. Like those boa constrictor that try to digest a mouse... Even when my pants still fit (and I hope it remains like this for a few months, not because of my sense of style, but because I'm not pregnant enough to buy maternity pants), it is true that I can't put up with them for too long. There's like a sensitivity in my stomach that wasn't there before... Something like a conflictive zone that doesn't want elastics, nor buttons, neither nothing that squeezes it. So I let it be, that's why princess cut was invented. Finally, one of these days I was nauseous for the first time. My husband was at the other end of the planet, so my hollywood scene wasn't going to develop that morning either. While I walked to the bathroom kind of dizzy without knowing yet if I wanted to throw up or to keep sleeping, I wondered how the equation nausea-constipation works out. I mean, if the body is expelling, is it the same from where it comes from? I leave you with the concern. I'm sorry, pregnancy makes me scatological and exceded in honesty. But that I also let it be...
Estábamos a 8.
Mi cuenta no daba.
Respire, señora, no pasa nada.
The day I found out I was pregnant I dropped my cell phone on the floor twice. It didn't break. Anyone would think that I was nervous, and you would be a bit right, but I assumed that being pregnant was lucky. My indestructible cell phone was proof of that. My husband was in Ibiza at a bachelor's party. Yes, madam, you read correctly... And I was trying with all my strength to remember when was my last period. I would have thought it was a 10th. I let myself be guided by my unworried instincts and I didn't spend much time in the matter. We were at 8th. Suddenly I remembered that we had gone on holidays to the beach and, obviously, it tends to coincide in almost every vacation that includes a bikini. So I looked up in the computer the photos of that weekend at the beach and voilá... it was a 9th. My mind that was never too quick for mental calculations, started to add and subtract. No one was hurrying me so I took my time. 9 plus 30, minus 2. My sum didn't add up. Moment of pseudo-panic and pseudo-joy. I waited until in my house there was nobody (my husband wasn't there but I did have two guests that were part of my brother-in-law's bridal party). On Monday I went to the drugstore and asked for a pregnancy test. I also bought some throat pills, only for the lady not to think I went there just because of the pregnancy thing. I'm a busy woman... see how I do several chores at the same time, madam. I read the instructions and was amazed by one that said that too little pee or too much pee could alter the test. 5 seconds of pee was supposed to be the correct amount. 5 seconds of pee... Impossible. I counted up to 5, just to count something ("Mississippilessly"). I'm sure it was 10 seconds, or 3 seconds, or one. Who can count in a moment like this? And I prepared myself for an ambiguous result, indefinite, of mild colors. But the stripes that indicated my pregnancy could have been made with ink of how clear they were. Pregnant! Panic, emotion, tears. The image of myself that the mirror gave me took the drama off the matter. There I was with the stripped stick in my hand and the world hadn't stop spinning. Breath, madam, nothing happens.
My romantic vision of pregnancy (maybe a little mislead by Hollywood) started with one morning in which I felt nauseous. I run to the bathroom to vomit and my husband, while drying my forehead with a towel, asked me when was my last period. I did a quick mental calculation and I said shyly "I think I'm pregnant" and he smiled with joy. End of the scene. Reality was a bit less romantic. It involved abdominal cramps and a visit to my Spanish doctor who, while touching my stomach, said "there's a lot of poop here..." and for the enjoyment of the public (I mean my husband, the same that in the previous scene knew about periods), the doctor added "... and gases". The horrible stomach aches at midnight where the result of me not going to the bathroom in three days (or better said, I went, but to stroll). It looks like constipation is related to pregnancy... but I never associated one thing with the other. It is true that my stomach is broader than usual, it's just that instead of being filled with baby, it's filled with... what the doctor said so sweetly. Now I do unusual things for me (and for those around me), like having a kiwi for breakfast and snacking All Bran between meals. When the stomach aches start and I go to spend a fruitless time in the bathroom, I remember that famous frase "the sweet wait" and I can't help but associate it with a less magical thing.
